Korea
Today
The
1950-53 Korean War not only resulted in a tremendous loss
of life and destruction of property, but also left a wide
rift among Koreans.
After
the war, both sides confronted each other across the Demilitarized
Zone (DMZ), amidst the tension of the Cold War. The Administration
of President Kim Dae Jung, which was launched in 1998, has
consistently pushed a policy of reconciliation and cooperation
with North Korea.
Vice-ministerial
talks were held in April 1998 and June 1999 to realize reunions
of separated families. In recent times, tensions between the South
and the North have been kept to an absolute minimum.
Both countries have made huge steps towards unification and
co-operation.
