About Korea

Korea Today

The 1950-53 Korean War not only resulted in a tremendous loss of life and destruction of property, but also left a wide rift among Koreans.

After the war, both sides confronted each other across the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), amidst the tension of the Cold War. The Administration of President Kim Dae Jung, which was launched in 1998, has consistently pushed a policy of reconciliation and cooperation with North Korea.

Vice-ministerial talks were held in April 1998 and June 1999 to realize reunions of separated families. In recent times, tensions between the South and the North have been kept to an absolute minimum. Both countries have made huge steps towards unification and co-operation.

America has helped to keep South Korea safe since the end of the Korean war. They currently have approximately 40 000 soldiers based in South Korea to keep the peace between the two countries.

South Korea has a very low crime rate and is one of the safest and friendliest countries in the world to live.
